Our Story

Life Preserver started with a family. And like many families, this one had accumulated a lot of photographs over the years.

In the winter of 2005, founder Nick Daze was having dinner with his grandparents. His grandparents were telling him all about a particularly rambunctious beach camping trip the whole family had taken to Mexico in 1972.

"I wonder if we've got those pictures around here somewhere," said Nick's grandfather.

They went to the family "photo closet" -- a room, really -- filled to the brim with the last 80 years of family photos, slides, and videos.

"You know," said Nick's grandmother, "if there were a fire or a flood, there'd be no way to get all these photos out in time, as young and nimble as your grandfather and I are." She added a wink in there.

Nick offered to start scanning the pictures and, having a great deal of photography and retouching experience, began to archive his family history. The task was Herculean, but as it grew, so did the ideas of how it could benefit every family that has history sitting on shelves, in books and closets.

Nick turned to his best friend James Myers for insight, ideas, momentum, and another pair of hands.

Fifteen thousand photographs and twenty-five hundred slides later, Nick and James sat with Nick's grandparents in front of their fireplace. He had his laptop out, and was showing them old slides of their first Christmas in their first house, 1954. Because their slide projector had long since died, they hadn't seen some of these pictures in almost 40 years. Each picture had a long and detailed story behind it, and one (a picture of Nick's oldest aunt and uncle as babies) brought a tear to his grandfather's eye.

"That one right there's worth a hundred dollars," his grandfather said fondly.

Ever since, Life Preserver has been growing steadily and adding features and services. But the cornerstone of our business remains the same: To preserve and restore our living history, one family at a time.
